Observation Narrative
Pronounced lateral drainage of water occurs across this naturally open, lower slope gravelly glade during the springtime and during significant rainfall events. Dolomite bedrock lies a few inches below the soil surface, and the slope of the hillside follows the dip of the bedrock. Soils have very firm consistence, much like limestone soils and unlike most dolomite glade soils. Lespedeza procumbens appears to be a good indicator of such soils. The rare plants Oligoneuron rigidum, Echinacea laevigata and Clematis addisonii are thriving in the plot area. The considerable amount of surface mineral soil provides the requisite habitat for Isanthus brachiatus, Sporobolus vaginiflorus, Clematis addisonii and Ophioglossum engelmannii. The only exotic plant present is Daucus carota. Cover of Rudbeckia fulgida would be evidently higher in summer.
Plot located ca. 200 m east of Batton residence (following a steep hollow / stream bottom) on south-facing slope of hillside, ca. 50 ft in elevation above stream.
